Blue Sky Green Field Wind Project
Wind farm map The Blue Sky Green Field wind project is located in the towns of Calumet and Marshfield in northeast Fond du Lac County.

Project Size
The wind project is designed to generate 145 megawatts (MW) of electricity and will be capable of powering approximately 36,000 average residential homes. The project consists of 88 wind turbines.

Construction
Construction began in June 2007 and is anticipated to be completed by summer 2008.

On Monday, May 19, the Blue Sky Green Field wind farm was placed into commercial operation. The turbines will generate more than 328 million emission-free kilowatt hours annually.

The tower sections are being off-loaded at the Port of Green Bay and transported by truck to the site. Each truck transports one tower section that is approximately 74 feet long.
The first two components delivered and erected were the base and mid-section of the tower. When completed, each turbine will consist of four tower sections.

Setting the base section on the turbine foundation. It takes approximately 7 hours to set the first two tower sections.
The base and mid-section, as seen here, stand approximately 105 feet.

Contractors
RMT WindConnect LLC is the general contractor. Since 1999, WindConnect has provided design-build services at 24 wind energy facilities in 17 states.

The project also includes several major Wisconsin contractors -- Appleton-based Oscar J. Boldt Construction, Hopper Corporation of Madison, Michels Corporation of Brownsville, and Baumhardt Sand and Gravel Inc. of Eden.

Turbine Equipment
We Energies purchased 88 wind turbines from Vestas Wind Systems. Each Vestas V82 turbine is capable of producing 1.65 MW of electricity. News release

Regulatory Approvals
On Feb. 1, 2007, the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin issued the Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity (CPCN) authorizing the project.

PSCW press release following approval.
CPCN issued on Feb. 1, 2007.
CPCN application filed with the PSCW on March 17, 2006, for authorization to construct the project.

Environmental Assessment
We Energies is working with numerous regulatory agencies to ensure the proper permits are in place and studies are conducted. We Energies conducted an avian study of the project area from late March to mid-November 2005. The risk assessment conducted as part of the study concluded that the impacts of the proposed Blue Sky Green Field wind project will be negligible.
